Hargeisa, Somaliland
Hargeisa is where Somaliland actually happens. As the capital and by far the largest city, it’s the first stop for almost every diaspora visitor, investor, and NGO worker — and the fastest-growing city in the Horn of Africa. SL Gateway makes sure you find what you need here without relying on outdated WhatsApp forwards or word of mouth.
About Hargeisa
Rebuilt almost entirely after the devastation of the 1988 civil war, Hargeisa is now home to well over a million people and growing fast. The city sits at a higher elevation than Berbera, giving it a noticeably milder climate year-round. It’s the seat of Somaliland’s government, its main commercial hub, and home to a rapidly expanding hospitality and retail scene — new hotels, cafés, and shopping centers seem to open every few months.
Getting to Hargeisa
Hargeisa Egal International Airport connects the city to Ethiopia, the UAE, and beyond, making it most visitors’ entry point into Somaliland. From here, Berbera is about 2 hours by road, and Borama roughly 3 hours. Within the city, shared taxis (dhaweyeh) are the main way to get around — negotiate fares before you get in, since meters aren’t standard.
What to Know About Hargeisa
The Independence Monument — Locally known as the “MiG Monument,” this fighter jet perched in the city center is one of Hargeisa’s most recognizable landmarks and a powerful symbol of the 1988 war and the city’s recovery since.
Waaheen Market — The city’s main market was devastated by fire in 2018 and rebuilt — today it’s one of the best places to experience daily Hargeisa commerce, from textiles to spices to electronics.
The diaspora presence — Hargeisa has the country’s highest concentration of returning diaspora, and it shows: coffee shops, restaurants, and services increasingly cater to visitors who grew up in London, Toronto, Minneapolis, and beyond.
A city still building — Construction is everywhere. New hotels and apartment blocks are going up constantly, which means listings here change faster than in Berbera or Borama — another reason to check SL Gateway before you rely on an old number or address.
