Berbera is no longer just a port town — it’s one of the most strategically important cities in East Africa. With the Berbera Corridor expansion, growing international investment, and some of the most beautiful coastline on the Gulf of Aden, the city is moving fast. SL Gateway helps you find what you need there without the guesswork.
About Berbera
Berbera sits on the Gulf of Aden and is home to Somaliland’s main deep-water port, operated in partnership with DP World. The Berbera Economic Zone and the Ethiopia trade corridor have made it a focal point for regional investment. Beyond business, Berbera has some of the most pristine and undervisited beaches in the Horn of Africa — and a historic old town that tells the story of Ottoman, British, and Somali history in a single walk.
Getting to Berbera
Berbera is roughly 2 hours from Hargeisa by road — a smooth, paved highway that’s one of the best drives in Somaliland. Berbera Airport also has limited direct flights. Most visitors combine a Berbera trip with their Hargeisa stay; plan at least one overnight to make it worth the journey.
What to Do in Berbera
The Beach — Berbera’s coastline is genuinely stunning and almost entirely uncrowded. The water is warm, clear, and calm in the mornings. Go early before the heat peaks.
The Old Town — Walk through the Ottoman-era architecture and British colonial buildings near the port. It’s compact, photogenic, and rarely visited by outsiders.
The Port — If you’re here for investment or logistics, the Berbera Port and Economic Zone is the main draw. SL Gateway lists verified logistics and shipping companies operating in and around the port.
Whale Sharks (Seasonal) — Between October and January, whale sharks are regularly spotted in the Gulf of Aden near Berbera. It’s one of the least-known wildlife experiences in the region.
