Borama, Somaliland
Borama is Somaliland’s third-largest city and one of its most underrated. It moves at a different pace than Hargeisa — quieter, greener, and with a strong sense of community. It’s also home to Amoud University, one of the oldest universities in the country, which gives the city an intellectual energy that surprises first-time visitors. If you have roots here, or you’re exploring beyond the capital, SL Gateway has you covered.
About Borama
Located in the Awdal region near the Ethiopian and Djiboutian borders, Borama is the administrative and commercial center of western Somaliland. The city has a relatively temperate climate compared to Hargeisa, and a slower, more residential feel. Amoud University draws students from across the country and beyond, and the city’s proximity to the border makes it a quiet but active trading hub.
Getting to Borama
Borama is about 3 hours west of Hargeisa by road. The drive takes you through open savanna and small towns — it’s one of the more scenic routes in Somaliland. Shared minibuses run regularly from Hargeisa’s main bus station. There is no commercial airport; road is the only way in.
What to Know About Borama
It’s a university city — Amoud University is central to life here. The campus area has cafés, small restaurants, and a young, educated population that gives the city a distinct character.
The climate — Borama sits at a higher elevation than Berbera and is noticeably cooler and greener, especially during the rainy season. If you’re coming from the Gulf heat, it’s a relief.
The border proximity — The Ethiopian border at Tog Wajaale is roughly 45 minutes away. For traders and logistics operators, this makes Borama a natural stopover and base.
It’s calm — If Hargeisa feels busy, Borama is the antidote. It’s a city where people actually stop and talk. For diaspora reconnecting with family roots in the west, it often feels like the “real” Somaliland many left behind.
